MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
In-class Learning is Coming Back!
On-line teaching, or New Normal, has created several learning innovations like it had never happened before. In education, new platforms have been invented to make teaching possible even when students and instructors are at different places to keep social distancing. Educational institutes have different issues to consider carefully. Firstly, students’ different level of readiness of internet connection. Even one student, who has a bad connection, can affect the experience of other students as well as instructor. Or, sometimes students’ body language cannot be well detected while they participate in the learning process. This affects learning also.
Now that we are all accustomed to the COVID-19, educational institutes start to come back to classroom teaching. With the New Normal learning style, students have gone through the new learning experience and their behaviors have all changed. Therefore, these instructional essentials may not work effectively any longer: classrooms filled with students gathering; same contents; same teaching materials; and same evaluation method for the same goal. The goal of education remains the same in the New Normal, but students can use different ways to reach that goal. Some like a lecture, others learn faster with graphics or videos during or before a lecture. Some students prefer self-learning. Each student learns and accelerates at a different pace, because their learning style and readiness are different. As a result, instructors must design their teaching to suit the preference of each student to attain the same goal. This is the most important issue in education now.
Moreover, student evaluation may change to “Evaluation of Learning” or to evaluate students’ outcome from a learning style suitable for each of them. New Normal evaluation enables a teacher to evaluate students’ understanding of new concepts and ability to perform certain skills. This enables a teacher to design effective teaching strategies to increase expected skills for students. New Normal evaluation focus on understanding not judging. OneCMMU is an educational institute. Are we ready to learn to change together with our students?
