Message from the Dean
No one knows when Gift Giving was started for the first time in the world history. Back in those days at the beginning of mankind, a cave man exchanged a gift to display love for each other. Sometimes a gift meant admiration. The gift was a memento, such as a fang, a tree bark, or a rock, which could be worn as a necklace or an ornament. The story of gift giving has changed from the past till present.
The Gift: The Form and Reason for Exchange in Archaic Societies
Marcel Mauss was an anthropologist who was interested in gift giving and considered gift giving as a type of economic system. In his work entitled “The Gift: The Form and Reason for Exchange in Archaic Societies” (1952), he explained that gift system was not consisted of a simple exchange of things, but it also implied a commitment or a promise. Moreover, gift exchange was a symbolic exchange meaning we could rely on and reciprocate one another, which was not about possessions only.
Gift system is another type of exchange of human beings based on a vow. This vow leads to relationship building between one another. The anthropologist consider this gift exchange as a significant process which helps humans weave and preserve their relationship at a personal level sustainably until it finally becomes a part of our civilization. Therefore, gift exchange, which is important for building and maintaining societal relationship, does not need to be about an object or possessions only.
