MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Unfamiliarity
In our life, there must be times when we encounter an unfamiliar thing. We try to figure out what we should do to pass this unfamiliarity smoothly. If we look at this unfamiliarity as what we encounter during our journey, we must have a plan for our life journey. This unfamiliarity compares to those incidents which happen naturally and affect the development of our life continually. The most important thing is not what we face, but our own behaviors in response to the unfamiliar situation. It is the development of our relationship with the reality, ourselves, and others.
There are ways we can develop our ability to face unfamiliarity by trying the following adjustments. First of all, “Reflection”, to adjust our reflection that these are not good or different from normal things in life. Refraining unfamiliarity or different things makes us resist.
If we accept the reality that unfamiliarity and difference are unavoidable and change is a part of our life journey, we will be able to accept the incidents which will happen in our life more easily. This enables us to adjust to ourselves to have more emotional flexibility or “Resilience”. We can stay calm and assess the situation before having any kind of reactions. Resilience then helps us to adjust our “Response”. We can take care of ourselves both physically and emotionally and be able to handle and take a proper response to the unfamiliarity as effectively as the situation allows.
The ability to adjust attitudes, emotions, and actions is not people’s innate quality, but we can learn and develop all the time to get used to unfamiliarity, a new situation with no measures to handle before. We should also try to develop our actions to handle a crisis smoothly.
With all my emotional support, I hope every OneCMMU can pass unfamiliarity mindfully. CMMU is also ready to be a house filled with love and warmth to be the base when we deal with unfamiliarity that could happen all the time.
