MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
SIBA (Strategy and Innovation for Businesses in Asia)
There is no place like home.
I just came back from MIT, Boston for the SIBA (Strategy and Innovation for Businesses in Asia) program, Batch 9, after 3 years of waiting. For this batch, the session, that took place at MIT, was switched to September instead of March. The weather was very different. In March, it snowed heavily and was extremely cold, but in September, it was pleasantly cool. And yet, there might be some time when the weather turned cold, since we did not prepare proper outfit.
The learning at MIT was intensive and informative as usual. The faculty and course coordinator were always kind and helpful. Not having been to Boston for three years, we could obviously see how much it changed. Many old buildings were gone, while new ones have been constructed at an alarming rate. Next to the Marriott Hotel where we normally stayed, there stood huge Google building. Also, there were many more big companies surrounding the university.
Everything cost higher. For example, there was no taxi in Boston, so we had to call Grab, which was very expensive. At the mall where we went, many shops went out of business or had to close early. Boston people mentioned that there was a problem of labor shortage both for services and logistics. This resulted in a shortage of some products in the market. Moreover, the interest rate of bank loan for residence skyrocketed to more than 6.5% for the first time in 14 years. This caused Americans’ living to be in great hardship. This trip made me aware of the change that is happening all over the world, not only in Thailand. Today, I am back. And, I am very happy, because there is no place like home.
