MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
The headlines on news these days has continuously been the warfare that technological companies are facing. Several years back, all former major companies were totally caught off guard by technological disruption. When the Covid-19 hit, it seems technological companies are growing by leaps and bounds. For example, Zoom’s income is increasing 300% during the pandemic. This inevitably causes technological companies of the new generation to step up and become business leaders.
Later, technological companies are facing a new challenge once again from disrupting themselves. Over the past few weeks, there were major layoffs in companies, such as, Amazon and Meta of Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Tesla, or Shopee at around the same time. This shocking occurrence gave us a wakeup call and we tried to find its cause. We discovered that once these technological companies had grown and expanded their dramatically, they started to cross into other industries until their businesses overlapped and competed. For example, Facebook started from being an online social platform which generated income from selling ads, from ads to videos, considering as rivalry of YouTube. Later, they continued to develop new functions to expand into other industries. Another example is a comeback of an old, large company like Disney which was once disrupted by Netflix. Disney started its own streaming business with own contents, until it transformed to a streaming platform called “Disney+” with about 100 million subscribers today.
In addition to fighting back with self-disrupting, Harvard Business Review analyzed that the reason of employee layoff was because these leading companies hired and gathered too many talented people in this field during the past disruption. They were totally unprepared for a sudden increase of interest rate due to the global economic recession resulting in the downturn of the company value. However, at the same time, the staff layoff is a good opportunity for other companies to have talented people to hire for their digital transformation (Govindarajan & Srivastava, 2022). When a layoff could happen to any of us any time, to live our life today, apart from knowledge and skills we have, “Immunity” is extremely important for us to survive in business sustainably and be able to compete confidently.
To create educational immunity is to change from focusing on giving knowledge to learners to focusing on learners’ thinking process and develop that process. Learners should possess skills necessary for this era, such as, following current world news, managing information for decision making, planning, learning skill and innovation, seeing through someone’s tricks and adaptation, communication, teamwork, etc. These skills are significant tools to create immunity for our learners. Moreover, Reskill and Upskill are also needed to help develop thinking process, knowledge, and skills more than from our routine job. We must meet the needs of the world and be an MVP or Modern-Versatile-Professional to fight against the changing and evolving disruption until it becomes a part of the world steadily and sustainably. We will pass this together #OneCMMU
