MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
I had a chance to visit Liverpool, a small town with a pleasant weather in the UK. From this trip, I have a story to tell about my experience eating at a restaurant where my family and I would order an appetizer, a soup, and a main dish. The appetizer and the soup came out as normal. But, we noticed that, at every restaurant, the main course always came out very late, and some dishes became cold when arrived. We often became irritated, so we tried to find out what was going on that caused this. We found that the restaurant would wait until the kitchen finished preparing all the dishes we ordered and then bring them all out at the same time. Now since we ordered many different dishes with the intention to share them among us, this caused the kitchen to take longer time to prepare than normal. Besides, the dishes that was finished first became rather dry and cold. Ding! We understood now; this was their food serving culture. Now that we realized the story behind it, our irritation disappeared. The lesson learned here is whenever we go to a new and unfamiliar place, there is always a culture embedded in every work process that might be different from ours. Thus, if we did not understand that, we might get irritated due to that unawareness. Once we know and understand, we can laugh at ourselves, “Why don’t we just get it?!? 😊” This has become the trip funny story.
To sum up, unknown is the beginning of all learning.
